THE ULTIMATE VOYAGEUR CANOE JOURNEY

Location: Lake Superior, Ontario, Canada

More information

Company: Naturally Superior Adventures

Dates: July 21 – 29, 2017, Friday to Saturday

Gateway: Thunder Bay

To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in the summer of 2017, Naturally Superior Adventures is recreating the Canadian fur trade experience with the Voyageur Canoe Brigades on Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. Your first night in Canada will be spent at a hotel in Thunder Bay. You will have time to relax and discover the city of Thunder Bay. The next day you’ll be shuttled to the harbor of Hattie Cove.

Travel in a replica 36-foot voyageur canoe along the same rugged, unspoiled coastline that was paddled by Canada’s First Nations people and fur-trading voyageurs nearly two centuries ago. Voyageur canoes are 36-feet long, 5 feet wide and carry 12 to 14 paddlers plus their supplies. They’re very stable, seaworthy, easy to paddle and well suited to the BIG lake. They are perfect for every level of paddler, from beginner to expert paddlers. In 2017, as part of Canada’s sesquicentennial, this shoreline will officially be designated as the Lake Superior Water Trail, a part of the 24,000-kilometre-long Trans Canada Trail. Our canoes are fully outfitted according to Canadian Coast Guard regulations including paddles, life jackets and other safety equipment. Your brigade will be guided by well-qualified trip leaders who are also talented wilderness chefs. You’ll enjoy hearty and healthy meals that include plenty of fresh foods. Spend your next 6 nights wilderness camping on the shore of Lake Superior. While the spectacular campsites and views of the Coldwell Peninsula are this trip’s greatest highlight, you’ll also encounter ghost towns that once bustled with fishermen and railroad workers in the days of the Group of Seven. Travelling by voyageur canoe, we’ll cruise along this rocky, islet-dotted coast.

Brigade #3 Lawren Harris Country: Hattie Cove to Rossport

The rugged coastline, stark islands and hardscrabble villages of Lake Superior’s north shore inspired some of Canada’s most famous landscape paintings. Today, Pic Island in Neys Provincial Park still captivates the senses the same way it did in the 1920s, when Group of Seven painter Lawren Harris immortalized its smooth curves on canvas. In fact, this 120-km stretch of wilderness coastline is one of the most infrequently travelled paddling routes on the Great Lakes. You’ll revel in the stunning scenery and intense solitude—the perfect elements to inspire your own photographs and sketches.

Package includes:

  • Return flights from London Gatwick to Toronto Pearson Airport with WestJet
  • Connector flights from Toronto to Thunder Bay (return)
  • All ground transportation and transfers as per the itinerary
  • Guided Canoe trip as per the itinerary
  • All meals as per the itinerary
  • 8 nights accommodation in Ontario (2 nights Thunder Bay Hotel, 6 nights wilderness camping)
  • All activities as per the itinerary

Contest Details: Open to UK residents 21 years and older. Contest opens December 15, 2016 and closes midnight (GMT) March 27, 2017. Fulfilment of contest will occur in July 21 TO 29, 2017.
